Short answer
A peptide certificate of analysis (COA) is a batch document that identifies a specific lot and reports analytical test results such as HPLC purity, identity confirmation, test date, and method. A useful COA is lot-specific, not generic.
What a COA should identify
A legitimate peptide COA should name the compound, lot or batch number, sample quantity or vial size where applicable, test date, analytical method, purity result, and identity confirmation. For procurement records, the lot on the vial should match the lot on the COA.
HPLC purity
HPLC separates a sample into peaks so a lab can estimate how much of the sample corresponds to the expected peptide relative to detected impurities. For peptide procurement, HPLC purity is one of the most important screening metrics, but it should be read alongside identity testing.
Identity confirmation
Identity testing such as LC-MS or mass spectrometry helps confirm that the main peak corresponds to the expected compound. A purity number without identity confirmation is weaker because it may show that something is pure without proving what that something is.
