Description
AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is a cell-permeable AMPK activator and intermediate of purine biosynthesis. It is one of the most widely used tool compounds for studying AMPK-dependent energy sensing, mitochondrial biogenesis, fatty acid oxidation, and glucose transporter (GLUT4) expression in cellular research. AICAR also affects purine metabolism and adenosine receptor pathways, adding mechanistic complexity to its research utility.
